Are E-Cigarettes & Personal Vaporizers Safe?

One of the things I am asked the most when I am out and about using my e-cigarette is if vaping or smoking e-cigarettes is actually safe.

As WHO has suggested recently, there are some brands out there that offer below-par quality e-cigarettes or personal vaporizers and there SHOULD be more regulations in place to make them safer, but the fears that seem to have surrounded them recently seem a little out of hand.

They’re blowing up all over the place, causing all sorts of allergic reactions, and even causing cancer apparently. That’s if you read all those scare stories you come across, of course. I’ve been smoking e-cigarettes and personal vaporizers with vape liquid for about eight years and none of these things have ever happened to me. I’ve used the wrong batteries in the wrong chargers (although I most definitely wouldn’t promote this behavior), and I’ve even left the e-cig itself charging up all night – something again that you are highly advised not to do. Despite being clumsy and breaking, forgetting, snapping, sitting on, washing, etc. my electronic cigarettes, nothing like the scare stories in the media has ever happened to me. Nothing has ever blown up or gone wrong.

There are THOUSANDS of chemicals in cigarettes that cause all sorts of nasty diseases ranging from cancer to a nasty cough and everything else that you could possibly imagine in between. Ammonia is in there and that has been proven to raise your blood pressure. Acetone is an irritant that will cause nasty reactions in both your kidneys and your liver. Carbon monoxide not only decreases muscle function but also causes nasty problems in your heart as well. Hydrogen cyanide can be found in cigarettes and that is an incredibly lethal poison. It doesn’t make sense to put those things in your body, does it?

Now take a look at the ingredients of your e-liquid; the one thing you are actually inhaling (not burning) with e-cigarettes. You’ve got nicotine in there, of course. This is the addictive element behind smoking and also raises your heart rate and your blood pressure. There’s also Propylene Glycol in there. This should not be confused with Ethylene Glycol which is actually poisonous. PG however is actually found in many medications such as asthma inhalers. The FDA has even classed this ingredient to be ‘safe’.

VG or Vegetable Glycerol is something that is considered to be only low in toxicity value but is also found in a number of cosmetic and beauty products, various medications, and even in some food items too. If it’s safe enough to eat, surely it’s safe enough to inhale.

With all of this being taken into account, the long-term effects of smoking with e-cigarettes cannot yet be shown as they are still a relatively new concept. Fifty years from now, you COULD suffer at the hands of these personal vaporizers and electronic cigarettes. However, on the other side of the coin, you could die in five years’ time from lung cancer if you continue to smoke these regular, toxic cigarettes.

I know which one I’d rather prefer…

In the studies that have taken place so far on the vapor created by e-cigarettes and personal vaporizers, very few toxins have been found. Very few, in fact, so few that the medical professionals themselves are saying that it probably won’t be enough to do more permanent and serious damage. When do you consider that fifty percent of all smokers will die of a disease or condition smoking-related if they continue to smoke, surely the chances that you take with e-cigarettes well outweigh the chances you take when you choose to continue smoking?

The one thing that I can say from personal experience is that life definitely gets better when you make the change. Aside from the occasional bout of ‘real’ smoking, I’ve been using e-cigarettes for almost eight years in total. I’ve lost weight, started exercising more, found that I can climb more stairs before getting breathless, got rid of that nasty cough I seemed to get every winter, and even got better skin, better immunity to the common cold and flu, and more. The benefits of making the change far outweighed staying as I was.

Will you be smart enough to try this theory for yourself? E-cigarettes and personal vaporizers may have some risks attached to them but the reality of it all is your life will get much better if you quit smoking regular smokes. Their electronic counterparts are a much smarter choice!
