Some time ago, I talked about court cards and your Myers-Briggs personality test and which court card matched which test result. What I want to discuss today involves how we are all of the Tarot cards. It’s not as far-fetched as it seems. Have you ever hung your head in shame over a homework assignment you had no clue how to do? That’s the mask of the Queen or King of Pentacles reversed. Or did you ever go against the group’s consensus because your idea was strategically better? That would be the King or Queen of Swords reversed. Were you ever so tired after a long day that you went to sleep and ignored your loving partner? That’s the Knight of Cups reversed. These masks are there for a purpose. They protect us from others, and they protect others from us. But how useful are they? There has to be a better way to resolve things than to wear a mask. Better though, not easier.
Spend time getting to know the Tarot Court. Take all 16 cards out and look at them. Spend at least five minutes with them. During this time, notice the positive aspects and the negative aspects of each card. Not the Queen of Swords, more the Queen of Cups? Have you ever defended your idea with facts and reasoning under scrutiny? That’s the Queen of Swords right there. We all have aspects of the entire Tarot Court in each of us, and it’s time we recognized that.
The next time you find yourself wearing one of these masks, think about the following:
Which Tarot Court card is this mask? What are the positive aspects of this card? What are the less than positive aspects of this card? What can I do to reduce my need for such a mask?
Let’s say that a lot is going on at work. Things have been extremely busy, and the deadline for the presentation is three days from now. There’s a giant backlog of other things to do to keep the company working efficiently, and there has not been time to devote to this presentation. The day of the presentation comes, and it was not a success. What’s more, the boss is upset and blames the failed presentation. As a result, the inner Queen or King of Wands reversed pops up with questions of worth, e.g. “What’s wrong with me? Why was I not motivated enough to make the presentation succeed?” etc.
Before that internal monologue is too far gone, consider the questions above. Journal about them. Why did the reversed Queen or King of Wands show up? Look deep within and unearth the reason it is there. Address it directly without hiding or ignoring it. It wants to help you. Acknowledge the mask for what it is: a construct meant to help you. By understanding these constructs, we can better understand ourselves.
